From the Middle Ages to modern times
Over the course of history, the castle hotel has been inhabited by many interesting personalities and has lived through different eras. Because of its originality, all of this can still be felt and experienced.
1th and 2th centuries
Romanization of the valley
The strategically located Ark and some Middle and Late Republican coin finds suggest that there was a fortress here at least as far back as Roman times.
845 n. Chr.
First mention of the name “Pergine”
The name “Pergine” was first attested in 845 AD, in connection with the mention of three vassals of the Carolingian King Louis the German.
1144
The Lords of Pergine
From 1144 onwards, the Lords of Pergine appeared in documents as vassals of the Prince-Bishop of Trent.
1220
First mention of Pergine Castle
The first mention of Pergine Castle can be found in 1220 in a register of the Trentino canons, in which there is talk of a meadow “de retro castrum de Perenze” (behind Pergine Castle).
Between 1270 and 1289
Tyrolean captains
During the power struggles between the Trentino prince-bishop and Meinhard II, Count of Tyrol, between 1270 and 1289, the castle came under the control of the Tiol captains.
1347
King Charles IV
In 1347, King Charles IV returned it to the prince-bishop.
1356-1363
Ludwig the Brandenburger
Despite the attack by the troops of the Lord da Carrara from Padua, the Tyrolean sovereign Ludwig the Brandenburg took possession of the castle in 1356, but had to cede it, along with the whole of Tyrol, to the Habsburgs in 1363.
In the early 16th century
Emperor Maximilian I
In the early 16th century, on the initiative of Emperor Maximilian I, the castle was expanded and embellished over the course of more than 20 years.
1531
Bernard of Cles
The Trentino Prince-Bishop Bernhard von Cles acquired jurisdiction over the castle.
1803
farming families
After the dissolution of the prince-bishopric in 1803, the castle was given to the Habsburgs, but in 1826 it was returned to the Trentino bishop, who leased it to farming families.
1905
Ferdinand Putz
In 1905, the Bavarian lawyer Ferdinand Putz acquired the castle and made it the headquarters of a pan-Germanist society that aimed to spread German culture in the Pergine area.
1920
Parish of Pergine
In 1920 the castle was acquired by the municipality of Pergine and transformed by private tenants, first into an atmospheric castle hotel and then into a private residence. In the 20s and 30s, respected members of the Theosophical Society stayed here, including the Indian philosopher Jiddu Krishnamurti.
1956
Mario Oss
In 1956, Pergine Castle was acquired by the Swiss engineer Mario Oss and transformed into a hotel, which gained international reputation thanks to careful management to enhance the artistic and historical heritage.
2018
Fondazione CastelPergine
In 2018, Burg Pergine came into the joint ownership of the Fondazione CastelPergine ETS as part of a fundraising effort. This foundation takes care of the preservation and repair of the building.
